Toys faster than supercomputers

The PlayStation 3 specs were released at the E3 Expo on Monday. The PS3 is supposed to be twice as fast as the XBOX360 with a floating point speed of 2 teraflops. Right now (as per the supercomputer rankings for November 2004), there is only one supercomputer in India faster than the PS3 (Link to article in Times of India). And imagine such kind of a system selling for 400-500$ (around Rs 23000) a piece. And all this computing power being used to drive the next generation graphics in the games. A normal console lifespan is around 5 years...so both of these heavyweight consoles will stay around 2010 and some predict the PC would have itself become a multi-core 5GHz machine by then. The question is would we still be just surfing, checking emails and chatting with that kind of machine?

It seems Longhorn - the next version of Windows - and hopefully WinFS - touted as the most advanced file system - will actually help the user in doing this. Great words...let's wait and watch.

40 years and still going strong

Moore's Law - number of transistors (components) on chip (circuit) doubling every 12-18 months - has been the foundation for many innovations in this half century. It's actually been 40 years since Moore had published the famous article (April 19th, 1965). Get a copy of the article here and many interesting photographs and stuff here.

Not feeling hungry anymore!

Consider this - the next time you are looking at a recipe for chicken curry on the internet, you might also be able to taste it. Edible user interfaces are going to make that a possibility by "sampling the dispensed flavor by touching one's tongue to the computer screen. Certain combinations of flavoring agents recreate a flavor appropriate to the user’s task". Ugh! Suddenly I am not feeling hungry anymore.
